What is yoga? The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word yuj, meaning a "union" or a method of discipline. The yoga most people are familiar with is "Hatha Yoga" or the yoga of postures. Howevery yoga is much more than that, and emcompasses a school of thought that aims to attain unity of mind, body and spirit; developing a strong, healthy and flexible body. Yoga is a complete science of life that originated in India many thousands of years ago. It is the oldest system of personal development in the world encompassing the entire body, mind and spirit. The whole system of Yoga is built on exercise, breathing, and
meditation. The exercises of Yoga are designed to put pressure on the glandular systems of the body, thereby increasing its efficiency and total health.
Is yoga right for me? Whether you are an athlete or not. Even if you are far from lean and not very flexible. It's a safe bet that you can learn yoga. Yoga is right
for you if you have the desire to bring balance and relaxation to your life. If you only practice for one hour a week, you will experience the benefits of yoga. The physical postures are designed to purify the body and provide physical strength and stamina.
Is yoga a religion?
The answer to this question depends greatly on how you define religion and on how your yoga instructor approaches his or her practice. The physical and mental benefits of yoga are undeniable. The benefits also don't depend on chanting Om. Many people feel they can practice yoga without conflict with their religious beliefs. However, yoga is connected to the Hindu tradition and draws on many Hindu beliefs such as karma, dharma, reincarnation, and Atman. |
